People often forget that “professional photographer” is two words, not just one. All photographers produce photos for their clients. But what makes a photographer a true professional becomes abundantly clear every step of the way, from the initial call to the final delivery of effective and usable images.

Experienced professional photographers don’t waste clients’ time. They have spent years doing photography projects and know how to streamline processes to save time, which allows them to have more competitive rates. Recently, I implemented a process that will allow me to deliver W-9s and my certificate of liability insurance to clients without them having to ask. This might seem minor, but it will save my clients 10 to 15 minutes. I got the idea at a convention, and it then took me a few months to design the easiest delivery for my clients and an hour or two to implement the process. I did this in one weekend. I’ve been adding things like this for years, and the more experience I have, the more streamlined I can make everything.

Experienced professional photographers make sure images bring value. This is of paramount importance in the advertising and commercial world. A professional doesn’t just show up and shoot. They spend the time to get to know the client’s products or services and why someone would choose them instead of their competitors. Knowing this information is essential before a photographer can even think about crafting effective advertising imagery. An experienced professional will also consider where the images will be used to orient the shots properly for different media—vertical for magazine covers; horizontal for websites; close-ups for bigger impact on a cell phone; greater detail for large trade show banners.

Experienced professional photographers solve problems before clients think of them. While problems differ by industry, a universal concern is keeping the client informed about what to expect next and what (if anything) they need to do every step of the way. Professionals will hold the client’s hand to make sure everything goes easily and there are no surprises, Professional photographers will also make sure the shots meet the expectations of all the different people involved—including the marketing director, the owner, and those being photographed.

Aside from the thrill of being behind the camera lens, part of the joy of being an editorial portrait photographer is capturing the story of our clients and conveying their message at a glance. I was able to tell Adam Calaway’s company’s story using our annual report photography services. It was our pleasure helping Adam get high-quality editorial images for Noble, Inc.

“While assembling a publication for my organization, I realized that I needed a freelance photographer for a photoshoot in Tennessee. After a few phone calls, a local photographer gave me Colby’s name. Having one photographer recommend another was my first clue that Colby was well respected in his trade. Now having personal experience dealing with Colby, I can see why he was recommended.

“Colby is the ultimate professional. He had a complicated task before him because I needed to photograph a person in a particular style that matched the rest of the publication.  But he was careful to ask all the right questions so that he knew exactly what I needed. The result was beautiful annual report photography that matched the rest of the publication. I highly recommend Colby’s Photography anytime you need photographic work.” – Adam Calaway

Though Adam heard about us through other photographers, we commit ourselves to personally living up to our reputation. We started by walking Adam through the annual report photography process. His goals were our goals, and once we knew them, we wasted no time getting started.  We quickly organized the technical and artistic aspects of the photoshoot and even found exceptional locations for impactful editorial portraits throughout Tennessee. This took the pressure off of Adam while still guaranteeing the high-quality photography he needed.

It was great helping Adam enjoy the experience as much as he did, and just as great helping Noble Inc., which specializes in agriculture research. From biologists to soil specialists to community teachers, Noble helps find solutions for problems faced by everyone in the agricultural community. Catch up on their work with a free subscription to their reports and on social media.

Hates Portraits - Matthew DeBardelaben

Our love for portrait photography comes from more than just taking pictures. It also comes from the joy of showing others the beauty we see in everyone else. Portrait photography was one of Matthew DeBardelaben’s pet peeves. He told us he hates portraits, so it was a pleasure to help create a business portrait he could connect with. When Matthew needed tradeshow and website photography for his company, Blühen Botanicals, we were glad to provide a smooth, enjoyable, and professional portrait photography experience.

I hate portraits – taking one is usually like going to the dentist. But Colby’s demeanor, studio, process, and knowledge of how to have a good portrait made a series of typically uncomfortable moments into an enjoyable afternoon. Not to mention that the pictures are fantastic!” – Matthew DeBardelaben

Of course, Matthew is not alone – lots of people hate having portraits done. I once mentioned to my dentist that people looked forward to seeing me just as much as his patients look forward to seeing him. He said I shouldn’t be so harsh on his industry, and then busted out laughing.

We don’t need to consciously think about setting up the equipment, lighting, and posing because that is second nature to us, allowing us to focus instead on engaging with the client and putting them at ease. We understand that a relaxed client leads to having a natural-looking, high-quality portrait, which ensures a fun experience for all.

Though some of our clients hate portraits, we strive to give them a new and redefining experience, and Matthew was no exception. We enjoyed working with him as well as the rest of the Blühen Botanicals team. Blühen specializes in CBD hemp processing and extraction for a variety of boutique wellness products. They take pride in their hemp-based offerings, marketed through their social media, their website, and word of mouth, thanks to their professional reputation. Blühen expertly designs and produces each product to promote their clients’ optimal health and wellness.

Laura Caves - Portrait EditingPortrait editing is key to conveying how people experience a person because a photograph creates an unrealistic rendition, stopping the subject in motion like a manikin. It was especially important to Laura Caves, an experienced marketing manager. She was looking to promote Pipe Wrench Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling Inc.’s owners as well as their services. Laura needed expertly retouched headshots for the company’s website, upcoming presentations, and other public relations projects. We found it a pleasure helping Laura get professional portraits for her project that showed customers just who delivers Pipe Wrench’s outstanding services.

“I have had many photos taken, but having business portraits done by Colby has been my best experience yet. Both Colby and his studio are warm and inviting. He took the time to walk me through the process, including portrait editing, which was my favorite part. If you want to have proper photos taken and proper retouching done, especially for a business application, then I highly recommend Colby’s Photography.”– Laura Caves

As always, our top priority is making sure the client is as satisfied with their photos as we are. By retouching the images during the actual photo session, we ensure the client has an active say in the retouching. This saves clients time as the portrait edit is delivered as soon as it is finished – while clients are guaranteed that their picture meets their exact needs.

Working with people as experienced as Laura and her team was wonderful. Marketing is not an easy job, though Pipe Wrench Plumbing’s expert services do make the job easier! Locally owned and operated by father-daughter duo Tom and Whitney, they’ve served more than 18,000 customers for over 20 years. Whether the team is seen in person or online, Pipe Wrench Plumbing’s neat and orderly work ethic, emergency services, and use of the finest materials practically market itself!
